Urban dance and music masterclasses... for free
This summer sees the start of an exciting series of free urban music and street dance workshops for young people aged 14-24 years across Staffordshire.
Throughout July and August some of the UK's best DJ and street dance instructors will be delivering the first phase of free workshops as part of an exciting two year urban music and dance project entitled Bordermoves 2 (BM2). Artists will include DJ Angelo, DJ Moyma and dancer Lucie Talbott (see below for profiles)
BM2 is a partnership project between Staffordshire County Council's Arts and Museum Service, Youth Service and its neighbouring authorities of South Staffordshire, East Staffordshire, Cannock Chase and Tamworth, Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Youth Music Action Zone and Punch Records.
All classes will be lead by professional artists who not only teach their skills but are out working on the DJing and dance circuit.
Young people will gain first hand experience from these experts. Workshops will be in DJing, street dancing and some break dancing. Participants will get to learn about the art of DJing right from the basics of using the equipment to mixing, scratching and battling showmanship.
The dance classes will incorporate many different styles of street dance merging locking, popping, crumping, contemporary and b-boying into finished routines. There will also be an opportunity to learn about the basics of break dancing.
Working alongside the lead artists in the delivery of these workshops are a select number of emerging artists or `trainees' who have been given the opportunity to `shadow' these professionals to further enhance their skills. This forms part of a structured training package which has been developed as part of the BM2 project.
County Councillor Maureen Compton, Cabinet Support Member for Culture and Heritage said: "Bordermoves 2 aims to capture and engage the interest of young people who may feel marginalised or may be in minority groups, whether the reasons are social, political, racial, geographical etc. Each area may have its own set of circumstances, but this is a targeted project which will look to work with those most in need in each district."
