Travelling library to reverse declining use

A brand new travelling library will replace a building with declining use and outdated facilities.

The Bradwell Lodge library serves Wolstanton, Bradwell and Porthill,

The 19th century building does not meet the requirements of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act.

Use of this Library is declining, and a recent survey of users showed 28 per cent thought access was poor or very poor - compared to a county average of just one per cent.

Councillor Robert Simpson said: "I believe the travelling library will better serve the three communities. The Library Service has investigated a number of options to improve access to the library but after assessing the user statistics and costs of refurbishing Bradwell Lodge and further customer consultation, I am confident this is the right thing to do."

Libraries support member, Councillor Maureen Compton added: "Given the access difficulties at Bradwell Lodge the Traveling Library provides the advantage of being able to locate a Library service within each of the three communities - therefore increasing access to the Library Service overall and ensuring that the service can respond to the changing patterns of community life within these areas.

"It will provide access to a wide range of books, computer access and an interview space that could be used by community organizations. It has access for disabled people and as part of the consultation 84 per cent of respondents found the physical access to this vehicle easy. The Travelling Library would be open for a comparable number of hours to the existing Library and will include evenings and weekends."
