Jen storms into the librarians' Top 10

Jen Bakwell has been singled out as one of the top 10 librarians in the country in a national competition.

Jen, aged 27, works at Rugeley Library. She achieved the accolade as one of the top ten 21st century librarians in the country in a competition run by Love Libraries.

The competition aims to celebrate young librarians who are making a difference in the community.

Judges chose Jen, who lives in Cannock, because of her passion and commitment to Staffordshire Library and Information Service.

Jen said: "I'm absolutely thrilled.  I've always been very enthusiastic about books and reading, and couldn't go through a day without picking something up to read.

"My job is different from day to day; sometimes I'm a researcher, sometimes a statistician, a storyteller, book reviewer and quiz master, for example. But always I'm here to help the community and that's my driving force."

Jen has pioneered a number of initiatives to get people into reading and into libraries, including a graphic novel and comic reading group for teenagers, which is traditionally a difficult age to engage with.

Staffordshire County Councillor and Support Member for Culture and Heritage, Maureen Compton, said: 'We're absolutely delighted about Jen's recognition as one of the up and coming librarians in the country.  Staffordshire Library and Information Services is proud of the hard work, commitment and creativity of our staff, and we thank Jen for her huge contribution."

The competition is part of a national campaign to encourage library membership and highlight the positive effects of libraries in the community.
