Strike plans aim to minimise disruption

The national strike action against changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme is to go ahead next Tuesday, March 28.

Employees of Staffordshire County Council, who are members of one of the various unions, will be striking, although it is impossible to say how many.

However contingency plans are in place so that disruption to service users and the public is kept to a minimum.

The County Council is working very closely with the unions at present and discussions locally are continuing to take place on a daily basis.

The authority is doing its best to limit the impact of the strike, which is a legitimate trade dispute, however some disruption is unavoidable. It is likely that some day centres, day services and schools will decide to close because staffing levels are insufficient to operate effectively or most importantly safely.

The County Council's Chief Executive Nigel Pursey said: "In the case of a national strike it is exceptionally important to work closely and constructively with the trade unions in dispute in order to contain the disruption to service users and the public generally. It is inevitable that there will be some disruption but the public can rest assured that all that can reasonably be done is being done to minimise the impact of the strike".

County Council Leader Terry Dix added: "Although observance of the strike will not be uniform across the authority, it is a fact that on March 28 the majority of our staff will be in work and functioning normally. Staff who do choose to strike have been fully informed of the position regarding pay deduction, sickness absence, annual leave and the reinstatement of service for pension purposes."
