Helping young trees survive the hot spell
Gardeners and nature lovers are being advised to take sensible measures to help save one of our most precious natural resources during the hot spell.
Many people have noticed that some native tree species are losing their leaves unusually early. Birch and beech are particularly susceptible.
This is part of the tree's natural defence mechanism for dealing with drought conditions. Mature trees will survive and will grow fresh green leaves if rain follows later in the summer.
However young trees and saplings are potentially at risk and can die.
But moderate watering can help save the situation without causing other problems for the environment.
John Wakefield, the County Council's Development Services Leader said: "Young trees are an extremely valuable natural resource - and so is water.
"We are not encouraging people to turn on sprinklers or hosepipes and leave them running all day, but a few watering cans sensibly applied can help save saplings that might otherwise struggle with the hot and dry conditions."
Saving a sapling now can ensure they are enjoyed for decades to come.
