More time for views on changes to older people services

Staffordshire County Council has listened to concerns about the future of services for older people in their residential homes and day services. The Leader of the Council, Terry Dix, and Cabinet want to make sure proper consultation happens before these changes go ahead. Terry Dix and Chief Executive, Nigel Pursey, have apologised on behalf of all concerned for any distress caused.

The Cabinet meeting on Tuesday approved the Council's vision for services for older people and those with disabilities as set out in the 'Changing Lives' programme. Specific changes to current services were also proposed. However following feedback from existing service users and their families, the Council has agreed that insufficient action was taken to involve and inform those people directly affected by the proposed changes, and has deferred a decision on home and day centre closures.

Susan Woodward, Portfolio Holder for Social Care and Health, said: "We are totally committed to ensuring that the residents of Staffordshire get the best possible services, both now and for the future. But when changes are proposed we need to make sure we get things absolutely right. In relation to the proposed changes to services for older people, we have not met that high standard. We now want to act quickly to reassure our service users and their families".

Leader of the Council, Terry Dix, explained: 'We are still committed to improving services for older people and those with disabilities. There is no option but to make the necessary changes to deliver these improvements. Where possible people want to stay living in their own homes for as long as they can. We want to do all we can to support this wish'.

Nigel Pursey, Chief Executive, added: 'We need to ensure everyone has sufficient time to express their views. We will be working with Members and officers to ensure the consultation process is very thorough. These improvements are essential, however it is also important that we continue to meet the needs of existing service users and involve them as much as possible'.
