Councillor development recognised by experts
Staffordshire County Council has been recognised by a panel of local government experts for its commitment to developing support for members.
The authoritywas informed today it has just missed out on the coveted Municipal Journal Achievement Award 2006 for the local authority with the best Council's Member Development programme.
The award recognises a council's commitment and services to enhance council members' overall skills, providing the right tools to support them in their respective constituencies and their wider work as community leaders. The overall result will mean a better members' service for all residents throughout the Staffordshire area.
As little as two years ago, Staffordshire County Council was strongly criticised for its lack of such a service, and now the council is a UK leading local authority that has been recognised by a panel of local government experts.
Robert Simpson, Chairman of the Members' Services Support Panel, who was directly involved in the Council's entry, said: "Although just pipped to the post for this significant achievement award, Staffordshire County Council has turned a complete 180-degrees and gone from a council who was seen to be lacking when it came to members' support services, to a council leading the way and one that other councils can look to for inspiration and a model of good practice.
"The overall success of any council is largely built on member involvement, which filters out to the wider public, and I am very proud that Staffordshire County County had been recognised nationally for the work we are doing to achieve this."
