Work gets underway on the next Link in Connecting Lichfield
The next stage in the development of Lichfield's prosperity boosting southern bypass is all set to roll.
The £2 million project has been funded by developer Persimmon Homes who are working closely in partnership with Staffordshire County Council, Lichfield District Council and the Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoraton Trust to ensure the bypass delivers the very best in every respect for the city.
This phase of the bypass will put in place the link south of the railway across Sandfields to a new roundabout junction with the Birmingham Road
Work has already started on site with contractors working on clearing the route.
The route of the bypass cuts through a key junction where the Fosseway, the Chesterfield Road, Claypit Lane and Fosseway Lane meet.
The first phases of the Southern Bypass were completed in 2003, linking the A461 Walsall Road through Fruiary Roundabout on the Birmingham Road, in order to serve the new Darwin Park housing development.
This junction will be closed for 12 months to protect public safety and ensure the bypass can be completed as quickly as possible.
The road closure will affect local drivers going into and out of the town to and from the villages, particularly Wall, Shenstone, and Pipehill. Traffic will be diverted via the Birmingham Road and the Walsall Road.
A massive leaflet operation will be underway in the next couple of weeks to let everyone in the area know what is going on. Details of the date of the road closure will be released as soon as the programme has been firmed up
.
Staffordshire County Council's highway's cabinet member Councillor John Wakefield said the project was more evidence that Lichfield was booming.
"Lichfield is a beautiful city. It's recognised nationwide as a great place to live, shop and do business.
"New development has brought with it the chance to build in new infrastructure to support the wave of prosperity. Once complete the Southern Bypass will connect the city's prestigious new housing developments, and provide congestion relief for the historic city.
"Staffordshire Highways is constructing this massive project and is totally dedicated to delivering long term benefits for the community, the economy and the environment, with the minimum of fuss and inconvenience today.
"But the job can't be done without the diversions. Drivers who use this route need to plan ahead and set aside extra time for their journeys," he said.
