Volunteers working at the Shugborough Estate join Nicky Burns from Volunteer Centres Staffordshire and County Councillor Ben Adams to launch the campaign

Campaign puts spotlight on Staffordshire volunteers

A countywide campaign celebrating local volunteers has been launched in time for National Volunteers' Week.

The year-long 'Volunteer Staffordshire' campaign will put the spotlight on local thumbanil - logopeople across Staffordshire making a real community contribution, and encourage everyone else to do their bit for where the live.

The campaign's finale will be an inaugural awards ceremony that will crown volunteers with a range of titles including the prestigious 'Staffordshire Volunteer of the Year.'

Ben Adams, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, is behind the new campaign.

"Anyone who goes that one step further and does something good for the community is making a real difference to where they live, and to Staffordshire.

So this campaign is all about thanking them - and showcasing the world of opportunities are just waiting to be taken advantage of.

We want people to feel proud about where they live and volunteering a is real part of that.

We know that most people have a range of skills that could be put to good use in their community, so this campaign will support the voluntary sector by encouraging people to take that first step to do what they can.

So we're laying down the challenge to everyone - What can you do?"

Nicky Burns, Chief Officer of Volunteer Centre Tamworth, and spokesperson for all of Staffordshire's Volunteer Centres, said that the campaign would highlight many people and organisations that selflessly give their time for others.

"We also believe that volunteering provides people with a real opportunity to put something back into the community, as well as providing a means to learn new skills, gain qualifications and experience, improve job prospects and meet new people.

We're delighted that the county council is undertaking this campaign which will see volunteers recognised as the local heroes they are."

Honra Shirley, from Blythe Bridge, volunteers as a Community Watchdog and Honra will help to launch the campaign. "I volunteer because I really enjoy it want to help the community where I live.  I'm really pleased that we're being recognised in this way."

The campaign's new website http://volunteerstaffordshire.org.uk  celebrates other volunteers from across the country and lists many of the voluntary opportunities available right now.

Horna said :"Whatever time you've got, whatever you're interested in or whatever skills you can use, there's an hundreds of opportunities waiting for you."
