Councillor Question Time sweeps into Stafford

The next Councillor Question Time event rolls in to Stafford next month.

Councillor Question Time is hosted by ITV news presenter Bob Warman and gives people the chance to grill a panel of politicians and top council officers on any subject they see fit.

The event takes place on Wednesday October 29th at Oddfellows Hall in Greengate Street and is the county council's very own version of Councillor Question Time.

On the panel are:

  • Deputy Leader (and Stafford North) County Councillor Robert Simpson
  • Stafford Central County Councillor Maureen Compton
  • Cabinet Member for Economic Prosperity and Sustainable Communities (and Stone Urban) County Councillor John Wakefield
  • Gnosall and Doxey County Councillor Mark Winnington
  • Corporate Director (Development Services) Richard Higgs

At each event, the panel consists of a Cabinet representative, local county councillors and a senior officer. The actual question session starts at 7pm and runs until 9pm but there is a chance to mingle with the panel after the event. Doors open at 6:30pm and light refreshments will also be available.

When members of the audience arrive they are asked to register and submit two questions. Some of those questions will be given to Bob to open up the debate. Any questions submitted but not asked will be responded to within two weeks so it's important to include your contact details. The audience is also entered into a draw to win a £25 Marks and Spencer voucher. They're also invited to fill in a feedback form to tell us what they think of the event so we can use the information to shape future Councillor Question Time sessions.

Deputy Leader County Councillor Robert Simpson said: "I am really looking forward to the Stafford event. There are lots of exciting things happening, like the plans to redevelop the Tipping Street area and this event will give people the opportunity to ask us all about it or raise questions on any issues they want answers on. I was on the panel at the Leek event and it was an extremely live debate with some great feedback - I am sure the Stafford event will be exactly the same.

"I'd urge as many people as possible to come along to air their views and listen to what we have to say in response. It would be great to see as many people as possible in the audience," he added.

TV anchorman Bob Warman said: "I am delighted to be involved in Councillor Question Time - it brings democracy to the heart of community. I know the county council is striving to communicate with residents in a whole host of different ways but you can't beat good old fashioned face to face communication and Councillor Question is what it's all about.

"Each event I've compered has been completely different with a really wide range of questions asked. The one thing that has remained constant is that the panel has done their utmost to answer the questions raised, even when they've been difficult or controversial and I am sure that will be the same at the Stafford event," he added.

Previous events have taken place at Keele, Uttoxeter, Leek and Lichfield.

To attend the event please email us at question.time@staffordshire.gov.uk or telephone 01785 276817 before October 24th. To find out more please to www.staffordshire.gov.uk/questiontime.
