The Gallery has a Multi-Sensory room which allows visitors to experience different light, sound and tactile sensations.  The room is available for use free of charge by all of our visitors, and we hope that it will be of particular benefit to visitors of all ages with learning difficulties, physical impairments or children under 5.

Multi-sensory rooms have been shown to enhance sensory development (hearing, sight, taste, smell and touch), increase hand/eye coordination, promote language development and encourage relaxation.

Our room is equipped with:

  • A fibre-optic wall carpet
  • An interactive bubble tube
  • A music creation hand wall
  • A fibre optic stool
  • A laser projector, pinspot and mirrorball

Whether you want to give your child a head start in life, support an individual with special needs or simply wind down after a stressful shopping trip, our Multi-Sensory Room is open to you.

30 minute and one hour slots are available every day during normal Gallery opening hours and are completely free of charge.  Simply register at Reception in advance or on the day.  (Owing to space constraints we recommend that no more than two adults and two children use the room at any one time.)

As we get very busy during school holidays we would recommend that you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

"This Sensory Room has been an invaluable resource for us. Our son has special needs so we use the room frequently and I can't begin to tell you how much we appreciate the use of it. On first using this room, our son had very little speech, poor eye contact and struggled with interaction. He also has sensory issues. He loves the lighting. This room has enabled us to gain interaction with him. His eye contact has improved immensely, he learnt his colours through the use of the bubble column, which he is intrigued by. Well done and thank you!"
