Through Our Eyes

Young Carers Project

Art work created

The project entitled, `Through Our Eyes` has been developed in partnership between Staffordshire's Heritage & Arts Service, Cannock Chase District Council and the Carers Association for South Staffordshire (CASS).

The project aims to consult with young carers creatively to highlight the needs and issues faced by them and to use artistic activity to celebrate the ethos of arts and health.

The involvement of CASS staff in the planning of this project has been fundamental to the outcome. This has helped to steer the project and break down any boundaries with regards to approaching an arts related project.

The CASS Staff are extremely passionate about the work these young carers carry out and are aware of the benefits projects such as this can contribute to their health and well-being. It's a time for young carers to be themselves, i.e. an 11 year old, or a teenager - not in a carer or parental role.

The project started with an icebreaker session this helped to ferment friendships, build up a level of trust within the group, overcame fears and the stigma that can sometimes be attached to the term 'Art'.

The art sessions were based around using the technique Monoprinting and collage. This proved a successful process to use in creating the artwork.

As a group issues were discussed around their role as young carers and their own personal experiences. The group considered what kind of relevant imagery should be featured within the artwork and key words to highlight and express their frustrations and emotions.

Over the two art sessions work was created to form a collaborate piece of work which is displayed over three canvases.

Following on from this process a booklet will be created to inform other organisations of the issues attached to the role of a Young Carer.
