Sonic
Sonic [dB] involves young offenders in music making, developing skills
in music technology and gaining an understanding of the music industry.
The 1st phase of the project took place in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Young Offender Institutions and was a partnership between Staffordshire County Council and Make Some Noise www.make-some-noise.com||
The project provides an introduction to a new industry for inmates, and a creative method of increasing confidence, self-esteem, team work and problem solving.
Clare Smith, Sonic [dB] Project Co-ordinator said:
"There is huge potential for the creative and work skills development of some of the most disadvantaged members of our communities through Sonic [dB]. Creativity and learning are essential to personal and social development. This innovative approach through music technology and industry training is a great way to encourage this development."
Change the Way
During the first phase of Sonic [db] the music tack, 'Change the Way' came to the attention of Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood, who became the patron for the project.
Tim said "This is as good as many records out there; it's the sound of the street…These guys have done something different by challenging this way of life, good luck to them. I'm very proud to be associated with such an important project. Music is such a powerful force in people's lives that it can bring out the positive and provide opportunities for young disadvantaged people."
The two music videos 'Change the Way' and 'One Life to Live' written and performed by Youth Offenders won a prestigious Royal Television Society award in the Best Corporate/Non Broadcast Category.
Life is Hard
During a more recent residency at Swinfen Hall HMPYOI, experienced artists Keith Dilworth, Sharon Jones and Wolverhampton based filmmakers Rainmaker VF (Davinder Claire, Alex Crowton and Balwant Dass) worked closely with young men to develop musical, technical, team working and social skills by creating a new music video,
Life is Hard.
The young men were also delighted to receive a guest appearance by Sonic [db] patron, Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood when he visited the institution to view the project underway.
