Museum & Gallery Work

This is the area of the service where most of our volunteers work. There are a variety of roles associated with museum and gallery work. Volunteers are usually based at the Shugborough site and work directly with the historic collections for projects based at the County Museum or the Shire Hall Gallery; carrying out research, documentation and management of the collections and exhibition work.

Audience Development

The Audience Development Team have responsibility for formal education activities and the provision of lifelong learning activities across the Arts and Museum Service. Based in Stafford, the team work to ensure that our services reach all our audiences. If you have a specific interest in formal or informal learning or in audience development we may be able to help.

Arts Development

The Arts Development Team aims to make arts accessible so that everyone can appreciate and participate in them. Most of the work is project based and is centred on working with different communities across Staffordshire. The team are based in Stafford and can offer volunteer opportunities for anyone with an interest in Arts Development work.

Who can apply?

Anyone can become a volunteer. If you are interested in finding out more about any of the areas above we are happy to talk to you. We can cater for placements within degree courses. Many of our volunteers are undergraduate or postgraduate students studying history or art related courses or museum/heritage studies.

The Value of Being a Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to gain practical experience and to develop your skills. It can also enhance your CV.

A current volunteer says:

'As a mature student volunteering has been an excellent introduction into the work of the Arts and Museum Professionals.  Through their guidance I have gained both in skills and confidence.'
