There are many different careers to choose from within museums and galleries and many routes to getting there.

For careers in museums a common route in is a degree in history, or a related subject. Many people then go on to study a postgraduate diploma or MA in Museum Studies. Work experience or voluntary experience in museums is a good way to build up your CV. It also helps you to establish what career path you might wish to follow: collections management, exhibitions and interpretation, audience development, learning or outreach.

Traditionally museum careers are not well paid, but they are incredibly rewarding. Most museum staff really enjoy their work and have gone into their careers because they are following a real interest in history. Others have specialised in an area such as natural history or archaeology and they are able to pursue these through a museum career.

Staff working in galleries often follow a similar path but may have concentrated on academic studies with an emphasis on fine art rather than history.

The Museums Journal is the main professional journal for people working in museums and galleries. It covers current practice, news and employment opportunities. It can only be purchased by subscription but most museums will have a copy available for their staff to read. Jobs are also advertised in the local and national press. The Guardian is generally used by many museums.
