Indian Summer event day success

The Shire Hall Gallery took over Stafford's Market Square at the weekend to celebrate the opening of its summer exhibition 'Inspired by Bollywood'.

The fun event which took place on Saturday 26th July was a great success attracting almost 800 people to visit the gallery, whilst many more took advantage of the wonderful weather to take part in the Gallery's outdoor activities.

Events included mehndi designs by Nasreen Rajabali, a traditional flower garland workshop with Zulekha Lokat and Bollywood dance classes with critically acclaimed artiste Chithra Ramakrishnan. Entertainment was provided by Beverley Carvel and friends, who played a variety of traditional Indian instruments, and the Sing the Nation choir, who performed their favourite hits from English films and musicals.

Children enjoyed having their faces painted and had a go at creating their own summer journals from colourful handmade paper as well as dressing up in saris and decorating Indian elephants with the Gallery's ArtCart.

Also in attendance were members of the Divine Onkar Mission (http://www.divine-onkar.org.uk/), a charity which aims to help the most needy in remote parts of India by establishing hospitals, orphanages and educational projects. The Mission raised £100 during the event, all of which will go to help their dependents.

County Councillor Maureen Compton, Cabinet Member for Cultural Services said: "I would like to thank all the gallery staff and individuals who contributed in making this event such a wonderful day for everyone.  `Inspired by Bollywood' is a wonderfully vibrant exhibition which includes iconic images from the National Media Museum, Bradford alongside contemporary work by Bill Chambers, Andy Jupp and Val Hunt.  Visitors can also browse a wonderful selection of contemporary craft, jewellery and textiles in the `Bollywood Bazaar' exhibition which is inspired by the beautiful colourful patterns of South Asia.  Both exhibitions are on show until Sunday 7th September."
