September 2011 proved to be a record month for Staffordshire Libraries. For Local and Community History Month the library service attracted 6675 visitors to a total of 165 events.
This represents a 17% increase on the number of visitors who participated last year, and a 48% increase on participants for 2009. Clearly Local and Community History Month is gaining in interest and popularity and goes from strength to strength.
Events ranged from computer taster sessions to show how to use ancestry.co.uk to costumed events for children, featuring, at different venues, Romans, Medieval Knights and characters from World War Two.
Authors Kevin Leahy, Richard Platt and Tim Prevett, as well as a host of other local experts, came to libraries to share their knowledge and entertain their audiences.
While the library services delight in this month-long opportunity to focus on local interest, they also want to remind people of the wealth of resources - books, pamphletts, directories, maps and online resources - that are available, especially in larger libraries, on an everyday basis.
