Staffordshire Library and Information Services - the library and information service for Staffordshire.

People's Network Online - the government project that aims to connect all public libraries to the Internet, through lottery funding. News and information about the progress of the People's Network project is included here.

National Libraries

The British Library - the British Library holds over 150 million items, and this site describes the collections, enables you to search the British Library Catalogue, find out about forthcoming exhibitions, and gain access to a useful list of library and education-related Internet Resources.

National Library of Scotland - an excellent resource which provides access to digital collections that include images of Churchill and the last letter of Mary Queen of Scots, as well as the online catalogue of the NLS and details of its collections.

National Library of Wales - the Collections pages are particularly interesting, with pictures and photographs of Wales and related subjects, and information on Tithe maps. The catalogue can be searched online.

International libraries

The European Library - the Gateway to Europe's National Libraries: 47 of them have worked in partnership to provide access to their catalogues. You can search for current Norwegian periodicals, look at illustrated medieval French manuscripts, or search the catalogue of the library at the Vatican.

Library of Congress - the United States Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institute, and the largest library in the world. It holds over 120 million items, and there are several digital collections of photographs and other materials that are available for free, online.

Membership organisations for library and information professionals

Aslib -  works to promote best practice in the field of information management, and has over 2000 members in over 70 countries. The list of members is a useful page of links to various information-related organisations and departments across the world.

Chartered Institute for Information and Library Professionals (CILIP) - in April 2002 the Library Association (LA) and the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS) merged to form CILIP. Find out about a career in information or library work, job vacancies, training, professional practice and current issues.
