Save a Book

The William Salt Library is the leading local history library in Staffordshire. In addition, thanks to the collecting activity of William Salt (1808-1863), whose collection forms the core of the Library, many of the library's printed books are also of regional and national significance.

Our printed books range in date over four centuries. The books vary enormously in binding style and cover a very wide range of subjects, so contributing to our historical, topographical, biographical and literary knowledge about the past.

Books suffer from wear and tear because of frequent and regular use, as well as from the effects of ageing. This means that many of the books, which are in our collections, are in urgent need of conservation. We have limited financial resources and so the Save A Book Scheme is really important in helping us to preserve our collection for the future, so that the books in our care remain available for people to use.

We use skilled experts to work on the conservation of our book collections. Their expertise is essential to us. Our approach is one of minimal intervention, so that the original character of the book is changed as little as possible.

This picture illustrates this point by showing the volumes before conservation has taken place compared to how they will look after the necessary work has been completed.
