America's 400th Anniversary: Jamestown 2007

On 4th May 2007, America will commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Virginia Company explorers landing on Jamestown Island, to establish the Virginia English colony on the banks of the James River 60 miles from the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay.

Amongst the outstanding collection of documents and volumes in the William Salt Library is an early plan of the estate of the Governor of Virginia, Thomas, Lord Colepeper (1634-1688), dated 1683.

The plan also features a sketch of Greenspring Manor House, which lies approximately 3 miles from Jamestown by John Soane.  This imposing mansion was the governor's residence of William Berkeley (1605-1677).  The house was eventually demolished sometime before the end of the 18th century.  This sketch is one of only three pictorial representations of Green Spring Manor House that is currently known to exist.
