How You Can Save a Book

  • You will find a selection of books for conservation on the Book List.  You may choose to save a book as an individual, with a partner or as a society or organisation. We regularly add new books to the List.

  • You can Save a Book as an individual, with a partner or as a society or organisation.

  • Once you have made your choice, please download and complete the Save a Book form, returning it to us by post with your cheque. We aim to acknowledge receipt of this within five working days.

  • You may also, if you wish, ask the Librarian to select a book for conservation to which your donation will be applied.
The amount of work required does vary for each book and therefore so does the cost of conservation. We have estimated the minimum costs of conservation for each volume and, once we reach the required level of donations required, we will remove the book from the list and arrange for its conservation. This means that more than one person can help to save a particular book.

Saving a Book as a Gift

You may like to consider a different kind of birthday, anniversary, wedding present or Christmas gift for the person who has everything! You simply need to tell us the wording for the dedication.

Saving a Book in Memory of a Family Member, Friend or Colleague

Saving a Book is a lasting way of remembering a loved one, friend or colleague. The dedication of your choice will be placed on the bookplate.

Our Approach to Conserving Our Books

Our approach is that of minimum intervention. In other words, once the conservation treatment has been carried out, the books will not look like new. Conservation ensures that the book will not deteriorate further and that it can be safely used by the public without fear of further damage. Conservation also preserves the intrinsic character of each book so that, for example, the special features of a 17th or 18th century binding can still be appreciated and not lost by an insensitive, modern re-binding.

The conservation process is carried out by specialist book conservators who will work on each book using time-honoured craft skills. All the techniques used are reversible.
