Colin Dexter OBE
The Patron of the William Salt Library's 135 Appeal is internationally acclaimed author Colin Dexter, creator of Inspector Morse.
Colin Dexter based one of his Morse novels, The Wench is Dead, on the murder of Christina Collins on the canal at Rugeley in 1839. Much of his research for this novel was carried out at the Willaim Salt Library.
He recalls that he spent "a good many fruitful hours in the library" and that he was happily assisted by the kindly staff as he consulted contemporary newspaper reports of Christina's murder.
The inspiration for this book came from the late John Godwin, a very active local historian and former headteacher in Rugeley.
