Staffordshire Police Index
Perhaps the most important addition to the Staffordshire Police collection, especially for family historians, is the now complete series of County Force registers. These cover the dates 1842-1977 and are the main personnel record for every officer who served in Staffordshire Police. Staffordshire Record Office already held the earliest registers (1842-1894) but on the closure of the Staffordshire Police Museum the remaining registers were transferred to Staffordshire Record Office early in 2007.
The registers are in bound volumes which are not photocopied for reasons of conservation. Since many family historians cannot visit us in person to look at the records we have introduced a new online index and transcription service.
About this online index
This is a combined index to the first two force registers for the Staffordshire Police, covering the period 1842-1894 (Staffordshire Record Office, C/PC/1/6/1-2). The index is arranged alphabetically by surname and then first name(s), and includes the date of first appointment to the force. Indexes to subsequent force registers will be added to this index as they become available.
We are grateful to Mr Roger Keight and Mrs Ann Sumner for their work on the index for the first register, 1842-1863.
Important note : this index covers the County force only. A number of boroughs within the county maintained their own independent police forces, and officers from those forces are not included here.
About the information contained in the County Force registers
The County Force registers contain detail about the officer's background, personal appearance and career.
Thomas Hill's personnel records give fascinating leads for the family historian. His place of birth is given as Kamarunga, Queensland, Australia and details of his war service are also given. In addition to this it gives a physical description of him on his appointment.
Further notes about the index and your register transcript
Please look at these notes about names, places and reappointments of officers before using the index. You may also find it helpful to review them again when you receive your transcript.
