- multi-membrane parchment documents;
- maps and other documents exceeding 60cm by 90cm (24" by 36") in size;
- documents which have undergone extensive conservation work;

Search fees are not normally charged where documents can be easily and quickly identified for photocopying. We will notify you if your request requires a search to be made. We can supply an estimate in advance of the cost of copies for larger orders, but a search fee will be charged for doing so.

Use of Own Camera
Researchers are permitted to use their own cameras in the reading rooms, subject to consultation with the duty archivist concerning the suitability of the documents concerned for photography.
The use of flash photography, photographic lighting and tripods is not permitted in our reading rooms. This is to avoid disruption to the work of other readers and to allow free movement for people using the reading rooms. If you wish to use such photographic equipment, separate arrangements must be made with the reading room staff.
Important notice : Readers are advised that from 1 September 2008, it will be necessary to obtain a photographic permit for the use of your own camera in the Archive Service reading rooms. The Archive Service made a charge for private photography until 2003. However the free use of cameras, in place for the last five years, has had a significant and increasing impact on the income which supports our budget. If this trend continues, there will ultimately be an impact on service provision. Therefore we will be charging a fee for photographic permits from 1 September 2008. This decision follows extensive consultation with the Archive Service's user groups.
For further information regarding this change please see
Use of Cameras in Reading Rooms (Word document, 35.2kb)
Please bear in mind that we are not able to accept payment by credit card in our reading rooms.
