c913 Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians orders a fortified settlement to built at Stafford

1066 Battle of Hastings

1069-1071  Harrying of the North

1070 William orders a castle built at Stafford

1071 Robert of Toeni builds a castle and starts to be known as Robert of Stafford (link to external site)

1086 Domesday Book compiled

1087 William I dies, succeeded by William Rufus

1095 First Crusade starts

1100 Henry I becomes king

1102 William Pantulf builds a new wooden castle at Stafford

1135 Henry dies of a 'a surfeit of lampreys' and his daughter Mathilda becomes queen

1139 England dissolves into civil war when Mathilda and her cousin, Stephen, fight for the throne.

1188 Stafford family falls on hard times

1189 Richard I becomes king

1199 Richard "the Lionheart" is killed, his brother, John "Lackland", becomes king

1216 King John dies, succeeded by his son, Henry III

1272 Henry dies, his son becomes Edward I

1288 Edward succeeded by his son, Edward II

1327 Edward II meets a sticky end in Berkley Castle and his son Edward III becomes king

1337 Hundred Years War starts

1348 Ralph Earl of Stafford rebuilds the castle in stone

1367 Edward III dies, Succeeded by his grandson, Richard II

1381 Peasants' Revolt

1399 Richard II deposed, Henry IV becomes king

1413 Henry V becomes king

1422 Henry V dies, Henry VI becomes king

1444 Stafford family marries into the Buckingham family

1455-85 War of the Roses

1461 Edward IV becomes king

1483 Edward IV dies and his young son, Edward V, becomes king

1483 Richard III takes the throne from his nephew Edward V and becomes king

1485 Henry VII becomes King and visits Stafford Castle
