The Anglo Saxons

Anglo-Saxon Tutbury

In 700 AD Ethelred I was king of Mercia and he often stayed in Tutbury.  During the 8th and 9th centuries the Vikings came on their raiding trips.  Being the seat of a Saxon King, Tutbury would have been a prime target.  The Vikings remained in this area until, in about 920, Aethelflaed drove them out, strengthened the fortifications and used Tutbury as a base.

Later the Vikings re-captured the area and remained until 1002 when King Ethelred the Unready devised a plan to drive them out for ever.  He tried to take them by surprise and on 13 Nov 1002 began his campaign by attacking them at Houndhill near Marchington in what became known as the massacre of the Danes.
