Staffordshire History Day is a huge success! The second History Day took place on Saturday 9 March and attracted 110 attendees and 20 local history societies. We listened to exciting speakers across a wide range of subjects, from aristocratic letter-writing in the sixteenth century and plundering civil war garrisons to the causes and effects of industrial pollution in the Black Country and Staffordshire poets. We also had the opportunity to engage with our local societies.

In 1779 the armed merchantman "Westmoreland" was captured by French warships and its priceless cargo of art, antiquities and luxury goods was sold off at Malaga. Staffordshire's Lord Dartmouth was one of the unfortunate owners of the captured goods. This prestigious exhibition first at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and later at Yale University tells the story of the event and the subsequent history of the treasures. Documents from Staffordshire's Designated Collection of archives are featured in the exhibition.
