For the Record : Olympics Legacy Project

For the Record banner

Running alongside the four-year Olympics preparation is the Cultural Olympiad which also dates back to the Ancient Olympics.  In response to this, Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service wants to work with local sports organisations and individuals to record and preserve their Olympic legacies for posterity.

Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service can assist sports clubs and other sporting groups to make a contribution to the permanent historical record of the county's sporting life. There are different ways to do this. Two survey forms have been created, to be circulated among as many sports clubs as possible across the County of Staffordshire and City of Stoke on Trent.

The first is a survey for members to record a brief history of their club, whether new or old and regardless of its size or level. It consists of a basic list of questions, with a chance for other information to be added if desired, and perhaps accompanied by a photograph. The Archive Service is aiming to accumulate as many of these histories as possible from clubs and other organisations or individuals across the County and City. This will ensure that we leave a permanent record of what was happening in Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent in the years up to 2012.

The second is a survey of any records held by sports clubs. These could be fixture lists, competition records, certificates, newsletters or photographs, or perhaps more formal records of meetings and membership. The Archive Service will be glad to give advice about the long-term preservation of these items, or to take in any formal club records for permanent safe-keeping and to make these available for people to use.

Club and sports representatives will also have an opportunity to attend events to be held at Staffordshire Record Office, to see what the Archive Service can offer to owners of records, and to view some of historical collections of older sporting records already collected and preserved for posterity. Two such events have already taken place in February and October 2010, attended by representatives of sports clubs and associations, some already depositors with the Archive Service, and by facilitators from supporting organisations. The events included a tour of the strong rooms and demonstration of conservation techniques.

If you have any enquiries about this project, or if you wish to request survey forms or an invitation to one of the events, please contact liz.street@staffordshire.gov.uk|| for the County, or chris.latimer@stoke.gov.uk|| for the City.
