Tracing Birth Family
If you have visited this page it is probably because you are looking for records relating to your own adoption, or maybe you are helping a friend or family member by looking for information on their behalf.
Although the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service holds historic records which may be of assistance to researchers we always advise people trying to trace their birth family to seek expert advice and guidance from a properly accredited agency at an early stage in their search. They can help you to trace records relating to your adoption. They will also help to make you aware of the various issues surrounding the search for, and potential reunion with, your birth family.
The Adoption Search Reunion| website, managed by the British Association for Adoption and Fostering, offers advice to adopted people, birth relatives and adoptive parents in England and Wales. The website includes information about :
• the legal rights of adopted people
• getting counselling
• a database to help you locate records of adoption (to which the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service has contributed), with instructions on how to use it
• intermediary services, to assist you in contacting your birth family
• approaching reunion
• useful publications
The General Register Office provides a variety of services around adoption, including :
• maintaining the Adopted Children Register
• providing access to birth records
• maintaining the Adoption Contact Register
