Voices from the Edge
A Community History Project looking at the local history of Audley, Alstonefield and Tutbury
The ‘Voices from the Edge’ publication is the final element in an oral history project which has taken place over 2007-2008. This was a joint project between Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service, Staffordshire Arts and Museums Service and the Victoria County History of Staffordshire. Its aim was to document how people on the periphery of the Staffordshire perceived their relationship to the County, as well as to document life in these communities and the changes they have gone through.
This publication marks the culmination of the project which began with open evenings at various times throughout the year starting at Alstonefield, Tutbury and ending in Audley. These open evenings were followed up by a series of oral history interviews, which form the basis for the publication. The oral history recordings have been added to the County Museum collection, and transcriptions of them have been added to the Staffordshire Record Office collections.
A free copy of this book will be given to all the local schools, museums and libraries around Alstonefield, Audley and Tutbury as a lasting record of this project. In addition, everyone who contributed to or participated in the project will receive a copy as a “thank you” for their invaluable contributions. Copies are available for sale at Staffordshire Record Office for £5.00.
We hope that this project has acquired oral history testimony which will be valuable for many years to come, and that the book will be of lasting value as a record of life in three distinctive places, far removed from the County centre, in the second half of the twentieth century, and into the twenty-first. The publication of the book builds on the success of the ‘Lasting Impressions’ shoe industry project which is also available for £5 from Staffordshire Record Office.
