Developing your Knowledge and Skills
Our Events Programme
Do you feel that you're not getting the most out of your visits to the record office? The Archive Service offers a range of activities including a regular series of short help sessions at Staffordshire Record Office, beginners' courses in family history and reading old handwriting. Why not take a look at our Events Programme for further details?
Developing New Skills Online
Entangled with Tudor handwriting? Mystified by medieval Latin? Maybe you find the very idea of visiting a record office a bit daunting. A range of excellent online resources is available to help you. The
Archive Skills Websites page contains links to external websites with brief descriptions of the resources they contain.
Volunteering Opportunities
Maybe you have some free time and would like to contribute to an archive project with lasting benefits to researchers while developing your own knowledge and skills. If so, we always have a range of projects going on. Some offer opportunities for working in a group with like-minded people, others suit people who prefer to work on their own. If this appeals to you please get in touch with any of our offices for an informal chat with the archivist supervising these projects.
Staffordshire Medieval Settlements Survey Research Group
The Medieval Settlement Survey for the County is looking to improve our understanding of medieval settlements by answering fundamental questions concerning the development of settlement in the rural landscape.
The Research Group will meet on Friday mornings at Staffordshire Record Office. No prior knowledge is needed but experience of dealing with original sources (some in Latin) will prove helpful. Guidance and training will be provided. Find out more.
Getting Involved
The Friends of Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service support the work of the Archive Service and have fun at the same time! Visit their webpage to find out more.
Many local history and civic societies also offer events programmes for members. You can search the Clubs and Societies Directory, maintained by the County Council, to find contact details for local groups in your area.
