Sulyard Family - Catholic Recusants

The Sulyards were staunch Roman Catholics and the marriages they made from the 16th century onwards were with other Catholic gentry families of Suffolk and Norfolk.  Frances Sulyard's marriage in 1800 to the Catholic George Jerningham, later Lord Stafford, followed the long family tradition.  There is evidence of their faith throughout the collection, including the will of Ann Norton, nee Sulyard, in 1643, leaving money to poor Catholic prisoners in London; personal correspondence; and the inventory of their private chapel.   As Catholics they suffered persecution.
