Warrant to Summon Jury
This is the warrant sent out by Henry Webb, Sheriff of Staffordshire, to John Turner, bailiff of the hundred of Pirehill North, requiring him to summon persons to attend the Sessions to serve either on the Grand Jury or Petty Jury. Bailiffs were appointed by the Sheriff to execute the process of justices at a local level. Warrants were sent out at least ten days before the start of proceedings. Jurors were chosen by the Sheriff from lists of those liable for service (men between 21 and 60 with a certain property qualification) supplied to him by the parish constables.
The list of persons to be summoned to appear at court to answer charges of misdemeanour and assault has been marked up by John Turner: none were to be found!
