Internment of Enemy Aliens

Enemy aliens were interned from the beginning of the war.  People of Austrian and German nationality were the first to be detained.   Stoke on Trent City Police war files include lists of 'aliens' (foreign nationals), such as this list of Austrians, Czechs and Germans, and telegrams ordering the internment of different categories of people.  For example, Austrian and German children under 16 were not interned in May 1940 but mothers that were interned might choose take their children with them if there was no-one that they could leave them with.
