Pigeon Messenger Service
Stoke on Trent had a large number of pigeon fanciers and so the local Police were well placed to set up a pigeon messenger service for communication between the City and the Civil Defence Regional HQ at Birmingham. The list of Longton men with pigeons is accompanied by a brief statement about their character. In 1943 the Sunday express sent a reporter to Stoke to write an article about the Stoke Pigeon Messenger Service, which was accompanied by a photograph of PC Herbert Breed at the Police Pigeon loft at Stoke.
