Assistance to Coventry

These letters to and from Captain Hector, Chief Constable of Coventry City Police, show how much the help of Stoke Police Officers was appreciated following the disastrous air raid that hit the Coventry on the night of 14-15 November 1940.  The raid, codenamed Operation Moonlight Sonata, involved 515 German bombers, most of which made a series of sorties throughout the night.  The first wave did such damage that the emergencies were seriously hampered in their efforts to mitigate the effects.  The result was the destruction of most of the city centre and the loss of at least 568 lives.
