It is a unique set of records representing a substantial period in Staffordshire's history, it provides an insight into the development of the region, the occupations and business practice of its people and the hopes of the community. Knight and Sons can now inform and inspire new audiences locally, regionally and nationally.

The largest group of records in this collection relates to the acquisition of land and minerals by the Heathcote family of Apedale Hall, near Newcastle. Commercial clients include Berry Hill Collieries and the Britannia Nail factory in Birmingham.
|
Papers relating to the Smith Hill Child family of Stallington and Tunstall show the systematic acquisition of land in Tunstall and Wolstanton for mineral exploitation.
The licensing trade formed another group of clients. There are papers relating to the Britannia Brewery in Birmingham and a number of licensed properties in Staffordshire.
The development of small urban estates by well-known names in Staffordshire's 19th-century middle classes, often a precursor to entering local politics is also well documented with title deeds and estate maps.
As to be expected in a solicitor's collection, there are also partnership deeds for professional and commercial businesses as well as probate material.
