George Heath page 4

Most writers and artists relied on patronage and subscriptions in this period before wide-scale publishing. George heath's friends and patrons helped him to publicise his writing. His lowly birth and unusual level of self-education was particularly promoted as something to appeal to the educated classes who were concerned with the education of the working classes in the mid-Victorian era, as well as those who were interested in the poems for their own sake.
