Before the establishment of the National Health Service in 1948, health care in the community was provided by voluntary bodies dependent on subscriptions and donations. Their work complemented that of the local authority Medical Officers of Health and their staff. Nursing Associations were worthy objects of charitable donation and the Darlaston District Nursing Association was established in c.1900. Its annual reports include lists of income (subscriptions, donations and income from stocks) and expenditure (largest outlay: nurses' salaries and board). Also included were statistics on cases attended, general rules and Rules for Nurses.
