Consulting Documents in our Reading Rooms

Please note that if you wish to consult original documents that you have located as a result of searching the "Gateway to the Past" Online Catalogue, you will need to :

  • Keep a record as to which service point(s) hold the documents that you wish to see. This information is given in the catalogue entry for each Collection level or Item level description. If the record you are viewing does not contain this information, it is probably because you are viewing a description for an intermediate level.
  • Note any restrictions on access to the documents concerned listed in the Access Conditions field in the Catalogue Entry. Some documents are available only on microfiche or microfilm for preservation reasons. [Please note that records that are closed to public inspection under the terms of the Data Protection Act, because they contain personal information about living people, cannot be found using the Online Catalogue. If you are interested in documents that you think may fall within this category, please email us with your enquiry.]
  • Only documents at Item level should be ordered in the reading rooms. This is because higher levels of a Collection, such as Series, may be composed of large numbers of items from different deposits of records located in different areas of our strongrooms. If you require an entire series of records please speak to the staff on duty in the reading room for further assistance.
  • Contact the service point(s) in advance of a visit to book a table in the searchroom. If you wish to look at maps and plans please book a map-table. If only microfiche or microfilm copies are available for consultation please ensure that you book the relevant machine. See the links below for contact details, opening hours, etc., for each repository.
  • Please do not visit us without making a prior appointment, as we cannot guarantee that a seat will be available.
