What does it cover?

General information and advice about the nature and extent of our holdings is provided free of charge. If you are unable to visit the office yourself, our research service is available to answer more detailed enquiries which require consultation of the documents and/or searches in finding aids. The service covers most of the sources available at the office and can be used for enquiries about local history and other subjects as well as genealogy.

The following points should be noted regarding certain types of record:

• If you want to find out whether we hold the will of a certain person, we charge a fee for a search in the calendars (or indexes) of wills unless the exact date of probate is known.
• The identification of marriage licence bonds and allegations also attracts a search fee even where the exact date is known because the documents are not in strict order and a search is required to identify the one required.
• If you require a copy of an entry in pre-1812 bishops' transcripts (contemporary copies of the parish registers), we can provide you with a transcript of the entry through our research service. We cannot photocopy these documents for preservation reasons.

How much does it cost ?

The rate is £22 per hour, charged in half-hour blocks, with a minimum charge of £11 payable in advance. Payment will be returned in full if we are unable to carry out the research but partial refunds cannot be made, although excess amounts may be held in credit.

Our Service Standard

Our standard is to notify you of the completion and cost of your research within 22 working days of the receipt of your order.
