Our Service Standard

Our standard is to notify you of the completion and cost of your copies/microform prints within 10 working days of the receipt of your order.

Full details of all of our service standards can be found in PDF Document Information Leaflet : The Archive Service and You (63kb).

Important notes :

Please read before selecting the service you require.

1  Placing an order

If you would like to use this service please download and complete the relevant form and return it to Lichfield Record Office by post.  Please do not return the form by Email as we require your signature to the Copyright Declaration.

2  Charges and Payments

All of our current fees and charges are displayed on the relevant order form.

Please do not make payment until we notify you of the final cost of your order.  The exception to this is the service for the photocopying of wills which is charged at a flat rate per will (including postage and packing) on orders received by post.

Visit the payments for services page for more information.

Photocopies of Wills

Orders submitted by post or email for photocopies of pre-1858 probate records will be charged at a standard charge including postage and packing, regardless of the size.

Orders submitted in our searchroom for wills consulted there will continue to be charged at the general photocopying rate as at present.

We only recommend that you send payment by cheque if you are absolutely certain that the wills in question exist and are held here. Otherwise, we will notify you on completion of the order as at present.

Photocopies of Other Original Documents

Copies of original documents can be supplied at a cost of 50p per sheet plus postage and packing documents subject to the restrictions laid down in PDF Document Information Leaflet : In Safe Keeping (42kb) (this document explains how our Preservation and Conservation Policy effects public use of archives). Documents which cannot be photocopied include:

  • case-bound volumes;
  • multi-membrane parchment documents;
  • maps and other documents exceeding 60cm by 90cm (24" by 36") in size;
  • documents which have undergone extensive conservation work;
  • fragile documents.

This is usually payable once the copying has been carried out. You will need to sign a copyright declaration on our order form before we can supply you with the copies. The form also lists all of our photocopying regulations.

A research fee of £11.00 per half-hour, or part thereof, will be charged on all orders where it is necessary to search to identify the items or parts to be copied.

Digital Images of Original Documents

We offer scanning and photography services.  Wherever possible we scan documents, but this is also subject to the restrictions laid down in PDF Document Information Leaflet : In Safe Keeping (42kb).  If photography is the only option available due to the format or physical condition of the documents we will inform you and give you an estimate of the costs.  For more information about these options please download our PDF Document Information Leaflet : Photography and Scanning Services (50kb).

Use of Own Camera

Researchers are permitted to use their own cameras in the reading rooms, subject to consultation with the duty archivist concerning the suitability of the documents concerned for photography, copyright legislation, and the purchase of a camera permit.  For further information regarding camera permits please see PDF Document Information Leaflet : Use of Cameras (60kb)

The use of flash photography, photographic lighting and tripods is not permitted in our reading rooms. This is to avoid disruption to the work of other readers and to allow free movement for people using the reading rooms. If you wish to use such photographic equipment, separate arrangements must be made with the reading room staff.

Please bear in mind that we are not able to accept payment by credit card in our reading rooms.
