Case studies

Cannock Older People's Team

We devised a diary for our student and followed roughly the same process as we did with another school student who gave very positive feedback. Our aim was to show the range of work we undertake and the roles within the office and those of partner agencies.

We started every day reflecting on the previous day and we fine tuned the diary plan as we went through the week. They spent time within my team shadowing where appropriate and discussing the assessment and careplanning process - they were able to see the range of supports we can offer, understand the current limitations and look at the opportunities which will come from the changing lives agenda.

We have good partnership working here in Cannock and are fortunate that a private carehome, age concern day services and Older persons Community MH team are all supportive and offered the students time to see their roles and systems.

County Equipment Centre

We've had a few work experience students here carrying out a variety of jobs depending on their preferences including Computer and office type work, Warehousing and delivery.  The last two placements went out and shadowed the drivers, discharge technician, store persons and office staff.

Codsall Area Service Office, Admin

We are often approached to see if we can provide a place for students each year and depending on the staffing situation at the time we always try to accommodate these requests.  The person would work in support services, shadowing staff and photocopying, shredding, outgoing post etc., jobs that can be done that would not involve working on the IT systems.

Health and Consumer Services

Previous placements have been in our Scientific Services area, where students get involved with basic scientific / analytical testing in a controlled environment.

Placements within the Trading Standards function involve students accompanying officers on visits to schools, shops, local businesses and watchdog events to gain a broad understanding of the Trading Standards profession / functions.
