Placements

Trainees undertake a wide range of placements and this provides the opportunity to gain experience throughout the organisation, as well as develop a broad range of skills equipping them for a future in financial management. Placements range from six to 18 months in length. Due to the longstanding and well-developed nature of the scheme, these placements are well established, with trainees playing key roles within the team and departments of their placement.

Placements require commitment and engagement from trainees. You will not be expected to run around photocopying and making cups of tea all day, although making the odd drink for your co-workers will probably go down well. Occasionally, opportunities arise for placements in other areas of the council, an example being Treasury Services, which is basically managing and investing the council's treasure (skull and crossbones experience is beneficial). These opportunities contribute to a rounded training scheme experience.
