Staffordshire Highways is at the sharp end in delivering essential, high profile, public services - day in day out on the streets of Staffordshire.
Highway management is a massive issue, with the roads network protecting and promoting the economic and social lifeblood of the County.
In 2004 we set out on a new road towards quality - a revolutionary public-private partnership which is delivering the County's highway maintenance and major construction projects.
With increasing emphasis on traffic management and integration, the new Staffordshire Highways partnership brings together all aspects of transport management and delivery.
It fuses specialists teams from Staffordshire County Council's own engineering and highways team with the two contractors, Accord Plc who are delivering on the highways maintenance side, and Wrekin Construction who deliver the construction contracts.
The Staffordshire Highways Partnership is committed to achieving an excellent, innovative, sustainable, responsive, highway management service for the people of Staffordshire. £300 million is being invested over ten years.
The contract is delivering a range of benefits:
- Major economies of scale in purchasing
- Long term investment in quality
- A committed, stable and highly skilled local workforce
- Greater accountability with one company responsible for all maintenance
- Commitment to innovation and value for money
- Close co-operation and monitoring delivering for the long-term
- Planning and programming improvements.
The highways maintenance operations underpin the economic and social dynamism of the region. The roads network is the key to prosperity and quality of life today and in the future.
We look after:
- 3,100 miles of road
- 100,000 street lights
- 12,000 lit signs
- 120 sets of traffic signals
- 255 signalised pedestrian crossings
- 145,000 drainage gullies
We employ over 100 staff involved in routine road maintenance, major road restructuring and resurfacing projects, weather proofing and surface dressing.
In the winter our teams are out at all hours spreading salt and clearing snow and fallen trees.
Staffordshire also has one of UK's biggest and most ambitious street lighting partnerships, with ABB Ltd. Over 70% of Staffordshire's 100,000 street-lights will be replaced over the over next 25 years costing £150 million.
| We keep over 1,100 road brides and 2,600 footbridges in tip-top condition and we maintain and strengthen retaining walls protecting our roads from slides and collapses. And we work with developers, advising them on road safety design and ensuring they put people first.
