About the Council

Staffordshire County Council serves a population of over 800,000, delivering a wide range of vital services to all the communities that make up our county - 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  We are at the heart of daily life, providing services that touch everyone - from the flow of traffic on the county's roads to the quality of our schools, from officiating at marriages to supporting older people in their own homes.

It takes a large and diverse team to enable us to succeed in our aim of making Staffordshire a great place in which to live and work.  We are the county's largest employer with a team of more than 30,000 staff equipped with a wide variety of individual skills and abilities.  Everyone is a vital member of the team, whatever their role, and we are actively committed to equality and diversity, ensuring that employment and services are fully accessible to all.

For a potential employee, there are hundreds of different career options on offer and you will find we are dedicated to your development and individual success within our team framework. We want you to achieve all you are capable of while enjoying a good work/life balance. People really are the heart of our organisation and it's people who make all the difference.

We never forget that the focus of our activities and organisation are the communities of Staffordshire. To this end, we are currently undergoing exciting organisational transformation to modernise the way we work, and to ensure that we are efficiently and effectively delivering first-class services within a changing county.

The county council's Strategic Plan - Staffordshire Unites - sets out our values and priorities for the years ahead, what we want to achieve and how we intend to do so over the next 5 years (2010 - 2015).

"Through pride and passion in our county we will maximise opportunities for improved wealth, health and well-being. Staffordshire County Council is here for Staffordshire People."

To achieve our vision, we are putting five core values at the centre of everything that we do and say:
- Customer and citizen focus. - listening and responding to local needs.
- Encouraging personal responsibility while protecting those who need us.
- Prepared to be bold and to show leadership.
- Provide efficiency and economy through innovation.

Politically there are 62 County Councillors who are elected every four years. They work closely with the council's officers to drive the overall strategy of the authority. It is delivered by employees working in areas which are responsible for the full range of services paid for with council tax. These services are:

• People
• Place
• Strategy and Transformation
• Finance and Resources
• Law and Democracy
• Communications and Customer Service

Nick Bell, the Chief Executive is the officer in overall charge of the County Council and works with the elected members and the leader of the Council, Phillip Atkins, to ensure it runs properly for the benefit of Staffordshire's council tax payers.

As well as working with members, the council also works in partnership with organisations such as district and parish councils, police, fire and health authorities to help improve the prosperity, health, safety and environment of the whole county.
