Extra Care Housing

Extra care residentExtra care housing is committed to giving older people a range of options to live independently. It provides an attractive alternative for people who may otherwise need residential care.

In Staffordshire we have a range of new build and modernised schemes where people have their own front door and access to care services 24 hours a day, therefore helping them to remain independent.

Extra care schemes offer the opportunity to rent and in some cases purchase properties in schemes which provide an environment older people find attractive and secure. The design of the buildings, along with the on-site care and support services, ensure that the majority of people who select extra care will not need to find alternative accommodation because of increasing frailty.

What is extra care?

Extra care housing schemes vary in design but generally offer:

· Your own front door

· Good quality well designed housing that is suitable for most older people regardless of physical frailty

· A range of communal facilities which typically include:

Lounge, laundry, garden, hairdressing salon, assisted bathroom

·  Flexible and dedicated support from on site care staff, including night care for anyone assessed as requiring personal care

· Encouragement and support to live as actively as possible, promoting good health and well-being.

Some schemes also have a shop, guest room, IT facilities, day services and a restaurant or cafeteria.

Frequently asked questions

How will I know if extra care is right for me?

The first step is to discuss your needs with a housing advisor at your district/borough council who can discuss your options with you and advise you on the steps you need to take. If you have a social worker you can discuss your options with them. If you have a particular scheme in mind you may wish to call the housing providers direct, they would be happy to offer individual advice and a visit to the scheme.

Can I apply?

Yes, if you are 60 years old or over. A small number of schemes accept applications from people over 55 years of age.

How much does it cost?

There are five elements to the cost of extra care:

1. The cost of renting/leasing your home

2. The service charge associated with your home, for grounds maintenance and communal facilities

3. Your support costs

4. Your personal care costs

5. Costs of any additional facilities. These are costs that are not included above such as activities, transport and shopping which you will need to meet from your own resources.

What will I have to pay?

Depending on your income and personal circumstances you may be entitled to benefits to cover or contribute towards your housing, care and support costs.

To find out what you are entitled to contact your local social care and health team, district/borough council or local voluntary organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau and Age Concern who can advise on the benefits you may be able to claim.

They will also check that you are receiving your full benefit entitlement and will help you claim if you are not.
