Business Continuity Management

Business Continuity Management (BCM)

A series of business continuity plans have been developed to cover Social Care and Health critical services.

We recognise that a well planned response to major incidents is good management practice and will help minimise the impact on the public, property and environment. A business continuity management (BCM) framework supports our relationships with other public agencies which is vital to be able to work together in responding to major incidents. For information on a multi-agency response to major incidents please follow this link to the Staffordshire Prepared||| Website.

Building on our experiences relating to the possible pandemic flu, our plans have been further strengthened by the development of the Directorate's Local Delivery Framework during Pandemic Flu, with particular emphasis on engagement with private sector providers.

The work to improve the resilience of the services is ongoing and we continue to promote good practice on business continuity across the sector:

  • Over 162 organisations from across the county attended a Swine Flu Conference at Uttoxeter Racecourse in July 2009. The conference was held for provider services and the voluntary sector to help address key issues such as BCM. We received positive feedback from the event with many saying they would be establishing business continuity plans or reviewing existing plans based on guidance received at the Conference

  • A toolkit for commissioners has also been developed as part of the NHS and Social Care project. It enables procurement officers to assess provider BCM arrangements. The requirement to have a business continuity plan, or being able to develop one should the contract be awarded, will form part of the tendering process.

  • A number of workshops have been held with private and voluntary sector providers to address the challenges of developing and testing a business continuity plan. In the feedback, participants showed that the events were a valuable information sharing point. They also proved to be a good networking opportunity and helped delegates think about the practicalities of planning for emergencies.
