Around the house
- Are the furniture and fixtures in a safe condition?
- Does household furniture appear to be in good/safe condition? (Also consider equipment such as high chairs and buggies.)
- Do windows have locks? If so, are all keys easily accessible in the event of fire, but out of reach of small children?
- Is furniture positioned away from windows to prevent children accessing them?
- Are all cords on window blinds and curtains either cut or stowed out of reach of babies and young children to prevent strangulation hazards?
- Is there adequate natural light throughout the household?
- Are stairways safe? (Consider clutter, loose fitting/worn carpet, stair lift, etc.)
- Do spindles, banisters, and stair fixtures have a maximum gap of 4" (100mm) and are they in sound condition?
- Are safety gates safely fitted in line with manufacturer's instructions?
- Are valuables kept safely? (e.g., ornaments)
- Are there areas of glass in the house which could present a hazard to children? (e.g., low-level panels in internal doors, display cabinets, shower screens)
- Are fireguards used and fitted safely and securely?
- Are smoke and carbon monoxide detectors fitted, working, and tested regularly?
- Are gas appliances checked annually?
- Are radiators set to a safe temperature?
- Is all electrical equipment in good repair? (Consider mains plug and cable.)
- Are materials such as bleach, cleaning products, hazardous substances, and matches stored in their original containers and out of the reach of children?
- Are all heating appliances safely positioned and in good working order? (e.g., radiators, mobile heaters)
- If any adult in the house smokes or vapes, is there a smoking/vaping plan in place?
- Are cigarettes, lighters, and vapes kept out of reach of children?
- Is the fire escape plan up to date?
- Are all members of the household aware of the plan?
- Is the house of an adequately hygienic standard? (Please consider if equipment/toys are in good order.)
- Are firearms or military memorabilia stored on the premises?
- If so, are they licensed and stored safely according to Police requirements where applicable?
- Are any of the family involved in dangerous sports, activities, or hobbies? Is there any dangerous equipment and where is this stored?
