Waste and Recycling
We are at the heart of the drive to reduce waste and increase recycling for Staffordshire. We are committed to and campaigning for a recycling revolution.
We provide Staffordshire's 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres across the County.
They are going through a radical revamp making it easier and easier for people to recycle an increasingly wide range of materials. The County is on target to treble its recycling rate.
The drive to boost recycling is paying off, cutting the need for any more wasteful and expensive landfill for at least another 15 years.
Team Leader for Waste Management Services, Kevin Glaze said the team was determined to help the people of Staffordshire protect their environment locally and globally.
"We have hit our 27% targets for recycling household waste for 2005. We look set to hit 45-50% in the medium term at household recycling centres. Plus Staffordshire works with Stoke on Trent to produce energy from waste at the plant in Stoke - taking 25% of the waste stream away from landfill."
"Through this mix of recycling commitment and energy from waste, our present landfill capacity will be sufficient to take us through the next 15 years," he said.
The team at the County are working closely with the district councils to develop a comprehensive range of options to help ensure that benefits to the environment are maximised and costs to Staffordshire's tax payers are minimised.
Waste reduction technology is developing fast and we are determined to harness the most cost effective and environmentally beneficial systems as soon as they come on stream, getting a balanced mix in our management armoury.
But we need the public to help us too in fighting the waste mountain. Staffordshire households throw away almost half a million tonnes of rubbish every year and its rising by about 3% a year."
"Waste is such a waste - it's a waste of resources and our valuable environment. Everyone can help by making their own resource resolution - to reduce, reuse and recycle. It's the best way to cut the cost to the environment and the taxpayer," he said.
We organise recycling outlets, landfill sites and incineration in Stoke-on-Trent for the District and Borough Councils.
The Waste Management and Recycling team also:
